Reactions to Washington Post Article on the Passaic River

I have mixed feeling about Brady Dennis's piece in The Washington Post on the Passaic River.  On the one hand, I agree that the Passaic is in immediate need of attention - the smells and toxic concerns prevent the river from being enjoyably integrated into community life.  However, the article fails to acknowledge some of the remarkable progress already being made to improve life on the lower Passaic.  For example, major changes since Cory Booker became major of Newark, followed by Ras J. Baraka, have led to the construction of riverfront walkways, enjoyed as Newark celebrates its 350th birthday this year.  Organizations like the ICC, mentioned in the report have been instrumental in these changes, as have other NGOs, like the Hackensack Riverkeepers.  Here are some links I found related to the Passaic River that I posted to Google Drive.  It's easy to say that Newark has been hard hit by the industrialization of our country, but it's hard to say how we might envision a future that is different.  [Invitation to the Passaic River Symposium is shown as an image and link below.]

  1. I appreciate the counter-argument to the article- it's nice to hear the positives of this project. Good points, and thanks for the links!
