Current practices in US agriculture intensively use
fertilizers, which contribute to eutrophication of our freshwater sources,
harming aquatic ecosystems. To put US
fertilizer use in perspective, the US is second to China as a top consumer of
nutrients (including Nitrogen, Phosphate and Potash fertilizers), using an
average of 6.6 million tonnes of nutrients from 2002-2007 (see Figure 1 below).
