Messaging through Reverse Graffiti
The article in CityLab by John Metcalfe about the artist "Moose," photographs the reverse graffiti that aims to raise environmental consciousness. By power washing beautiful, intricate stencils, Moose produces lovely animal-themed images that overlay dirty sidewalks. While I have seen environmental art that used found objects that raise our awareness of waste (Swetsville Zoo), and had heard about a female artist that shook hands with each member of the NYC water department staff, who I believe did some performative art by washing the sidewalk, I had not seen art that uses cleaning as the media in this way. As the Bay Area bureau chief of City Lab, I sought out Metcalfe's work, because, though I don't live in California, I admire the sensibilities and approaches to urban life found in this part of California.
